A reflection on UPGRADE, a project of Marco Bonafè — Brutal.Eth by Nina Knaack.
Marco Bonafè's new collection, UPGRADE, presents a blend of elements from Mark Rothko's paintings, reinterpreted through Bonafè's digital approach. This process involved the selection of specific elements from a collection of 300 Rothko paintings, ranging from the 1950s to the 1970s. Subsequently, each artwork in the UPGRADE collection is a composite of various aspects from Rothko's works, like color schemes, dates, and titles. Initially, Bonafè — under his digital moniker BrutalEth — created abstract forms, followed by the application of color samples and titles from Rothko's works. These are then layered in multiple stages using Photoshop, with a focus on crafting each piece to be distinct in its composition and detail. In creating UPGRADE, Bonafè thus employs a methodology that incorporates both generative and manual techniques. Bonafè's work in UPGRADE aligns with Rothko's emphasis on color layering, albeit through the use of digital tools. This approach mirrors Rothko's exploration of hues and contrasts, but within a modern digital context: Bonafè's process in UPGRADE involves the digital manipulation of images and the utilization of technology to achieve desired effects. The project, consisting of seven traits, reflects Bonafè's engagement with both the traditional and digital art forms.
